Hi! I needed a break from the more research-intensive newsletter, so I thought I’d try something a bit different. Let me know what you think!

Julia Landon (opened in 1927) and Alfred I. duPont (opened in 1940) were some of the earliest high schools in Jacksonville, Florida. Both ceased being high schools in 1965, and today both are middle schools. I think Landon Lions and DuPont Dragons are great names, and I love the orange/black and gold/green color schemes. I doubt that (especially as they are middle schools) the Landon vs. DuPont rivalry is as much of a thing as I wish it was (or much of a thing at all.) But I do know that the schools are just five miles apart, and that (if the internet can be trusted) they will square off in a football game this week. I had fun coming up with some shirt concepts for the rivalry.

The DuPont script is based on some lettering that used to be on the exterior of the school, and the Landon wordmark was used widely at the school in the 1940s and 50s.

I like the idea of some smack talking rivalry shirts. Is it obvious that “The Lions Sleep Tonight” is an ANTI-Lions shirt? Like they’re going to get killed? Let me know what you think in the comments.

I’m not sure if these really work, but I’ve had the idea for a long time. It seems unlikely that Julia Landon and Alfred duPont were ever known as “Jules” or “Freddie,” but I think that’s what amuses me about it.

These came from goofy yearbook illustrations. The trouble with this sort of thing is that I’m never sure if it was a sort of clip art thing or if they were unique to the school, but I do love this sort of thing.

Hope you enjoyed these!
